Melanie Jewson Foundation Pty Ltd

The Melanie Jewson Foundation Pty Ltd has been established in memory of Melanie and to maintain financial support for the ongoing daily running costs and maintenance of the Melanie Jewson Memorial Chapel (MJMC) at the Vila Central Hospital (VCH) in Vanuatu.  In addition, the Foundation seeks to support the VCH with equipment, local schools with equipment and to support local children with access to education.

The Patron

Martin Sheen is the patron of the Melanie Jewson Foundation. Melanie’s parents, Gary & Libby, met Martin Sheen in 2009 when Martin was filming ‘The Way’ in Spain with his son Emilio. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. (http://theway-themovie.com)

Directors

The Melanie Jewson Foundation Pty Ltd was signed off on September 24th 2011, five years to the day since the chapel was dedicated in Port Vila in 2006.  Mrs Elizabeth and Mr Gary Jewson and are the directors of the Foundation. The board will also comprise approximately nine other members including Melanie’s brother and sister, André and Ashlee, with specific skills in education, health, pastoral care and finance. The first meeting of the Board is planned for mid-January 2012.

Rotary

The Belmont Rotary Club (BRC) in Geelong has connected with us through Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd (RAWCS).  It is hoped that the Belmont Rotary Club will assist with the ongoing maintenance of the Chapel, with periodic projects at the Hospital and with the transport of equipment as required.  We are excited about our partnership with the BRC and look forward to working with them to support the Foundation’s projects in Vanuatu.

Current Projects

  • Foundation Launch – March 2012
  • Equipment for Physio Department – The 1st shipment of 6 pair of crutches was delivered to the hospital last week via family friends. Walking aids are very difficult to source in Vanuatu.
